Training
My training work has two strands. The first is continuing professional development for sign language translators and interpreters already working in the field. The second is aimed at groups and organisations that want to understand Libras and what Brazilian law establishes in relation to it.

Strand 1Training for translators and interpreters
For those already working in the field, delivered through professional associations, training courses and postgraduate programmes. The topics I teach most often:
Interpreting into Portuguese
The Libras-to-Portuguese direction in simultaneous interpreting: understanding the signed source text, register decisions and spoken production under time pressure.
Career and professional practice
Translation and interpreting as a profession and a livelihood: pricing, professional presentation, positioning, good practice and building a career that lasts.
Translation policy and linguistic rights
How Brazilian federal legislation regulates Libras translation and interpreting, the linguistic duties that follow from it and the role of translators and interpreters in securing rights.

What participants say
So much sharing, so much learning and so many lightbulb moments in a single day! […] We need to value our work as interpreters, but it is extremely important to pay attention to the details that make all the difference when it comes to getting hired. Here’s to more workshops like this one!
I came away from our session with plenty of tasks to complete and ideas to take forward. […] I recommend this workshop to any translator or interpreter working between Libras and Portuguese.

Strand 2Training for groups and organisations
For public bodies, NGOs, companies and study groups.
What the law requires of organisations
What Brazilian law requires of companies and public bodies, from communication with the public (events, videos and campaigns) to everyday working life within their own teams.
What makes Libras a language
An introduction to the linguistics of Libras for people who have never studied the language: how it is organised, the most common myths and what this knowledge changes in interactions with Deaf people.
